Scotties Open Season at Southeast Tourney Going 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 For the second straight season the Highland volleyball team opened the season in Beatrice, NE as part of the Southeast Tournament and posted a 4-0 record once again to open the year.

The 4-0 start to the season didn't come easy as the Scotties needed four sets or more to win three of the four matchups playing some tight sets. Highland opened the Southeast Tournament on Friday morning against Hawkeye Community College and picked up the 3-1 win (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18).

To wrap up day one of the tournament the Scotties rolled past Williston State College winning in three-straight sets taking the 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-15, 25-14) improving to 2-0 to start the season.

On Saturday a pair of tough matchups played themselves out for the Scotties has Highland squared off with North Platte and Northeast Community Colleges. Highland need five sets to take the win over North Platte and the Scotties after suffering a set one loss battled back to win the match. Scotties took sets two and three in the match but fell in set four forcing a fifth set where the Scotties grabbed the win (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 15-7).

To finish up the tournament the Scotties took on 17th ranked NJCAA Division II team in Northeast Community College and picked up a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19).

"It was great to see the girls perform the way they did this opening weekend. There were some tough teams and the competition was great. To see the girls play the way we did this early was very promising. Really looking forward to the rest of the season with this team has we had a lot of fun this weekend," said Head Coach Jon Bingesser when recalling the 4-0 start to the season at the Southeast Tournament.

Scotties open up KJCCC play in their next competition when they travel to Coffeyville to take on the #1 ranked NJCAA Division II team in the country in the Red Ravens of Coffeyville Community College at 6:00pm.

Match One: Highland CC won 3-1 vs Hawkeye CC (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18)

First match of the tournament was balanced for the Scotties with contributions from all-around. Emma Cohalla led the way in kills with 15, while both Hannah Wagner and Cajia Allen each registered 11 kills. Defensively four girls finished with double figure digs led by Kirsten Johnson and Amber Hildebrand who each notched 15 digs. Allen added 14 digs for a double-double in the contest, while Katie Pearson had 11 digs on top of her 51 assists at setter.

Match Two: Highland CC won 3-0 vs Williston State College (25-15, 25-15, 25-14)

Lee Sexton stepped against Williston and tallied 13 kills to lead the Scotties, while Cohalla once again had double figure kills with 12. Both Hannah Williams and Allen each chipped in eight kills apiece. Allen added 13 digs to her line, while Williams had a pair of blocks. Johnson and Hildebrand each recorded nine digs and Pearson had 40 assists in the win.

Match Three: Highland CC won 3-2 vs North Platte CC (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 15-7)

The trend of different players stepping up continued in the third match of the tournament as Abby Williams had a strong game with 12 kills and five blocks. Cohalla and Allen led the team in kills with 15, as Emma added three digs and Cajia had eight digs. Pearson had her second 50 assist match of the year and chipped in 11 digs and four aces, while Myla Turner led the team defensively with 15 digs. Hannah Williams added six kills and nine blocks.

Match Four: Highland CC won 3-1 vs Northeast CC (23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19)

First win over a ranked team this season saw the Scotties have a trio of double figure performances in kills and digs in the victory over Northeast CC. Hannah Williams had a monster match recording a career high 19 kills, while adding three digs and four blocks. Allen had another double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, adding a pair of aces, also. Pearson registered 45 assists, 13 digs and three aces, while Turner finished with 10 digs and three aces. Wagner added 10 kills in the victory.
