Arizona Western Softball sweeps Dawson at Tucson Invitational Games

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (12-10) picked up a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Dawson Community College (12-8) on Thursday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz., winning both games by the score of 8-2.

The Lady Matadors scored all eight runs in game one in one inning, coming back from a two-run deficit to take the opener over the Buccaneers.

Dawson took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Lady Matadors sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning, scoring eight runs. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of Kaity McLaughlin who drove in three runs with a triple.

Mollie Forbes had a pair of hits in the win, going 2-for-4 while Jessie Garcia started the game and held the Bucs to two runs.

Forbes helped lead the way in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple in the 8-2 win to secure the sweep.

The Lady Matadors scored three runs in the second inning before Dawson cut the lead to two runs at 3-1 with a run in the fourth inning.

Arizona Western pushed the lead up to 5-1 with two runs in the fifth inning on a Jayleen Espinoza two-run double. The Lady Matadors pulled away with three runs in the seventh, two coming in to score on a Forbes double.

The Lady Matadors return home for an ACCAC doubleheader against Central Arizona on Saturday, March 16, with the first pitch scheduled for Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
