The Lake Region State College Men's & Women's basketball teams were in action on Sunday to take on the visiting Miles CC Pioneers.
First up was the women. It was a slow start for the Royals, they would trail the Pioneers 22-13 after the 1st. Then, in the second they would play what Head Coach Danny Mertens called, their best quarter of the year, holding Miles to 11 points and scoring 14 of their own. They would still find themselves in a hole 33-27 at the half. The second half was all Miles as LRSC couldn't get their wheels spinning. They would fall by the final score of 75-52. Kayla Byrne would lead Lake Region with 17pts. Marta Lopez would chip in 8pts 3rebs & 3ast.
Coach Mertens after the game, "This was another up and down performance from the team. We had a great second quarter, probably the best of the year. We were just unable to maintain it and extend it into the 2nd half. They are an athletic team, they pressed us the whole game. I was really happy to see how much better we handled pressure this game. There is a lot of potential with this group."
The Lady Royals are now 3-3 on the year.
Next up, the men. Looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Dawson, LRSC would come out and dominate the first half defensively. Holding Miles to 15 total points, and leading 30-15. Things got dicey at times in the 2nd as the Pioneers would cut the LRSC lead to five. However, a few timely shots made by Tyler Loe 10pts and Djordje Mitrovic 8pts, would once again extend the lead. The final LRSC 66 MCC 55. Trace Evans would put up a 14pt 11reb double double performance off the bench.
Head Coach Jared Marshall after the game, "It was good to get a bounce back win today. Once again we had a dominant first half defensively. Just like at Dawson though, we let up in the 2nd. We were fortuante it did not cost us a win this time. We just need to come out of the lockerroom with the same intensity as we start the games. However, I am very pleased with how hard we are playing and how well we are guarding."
The Royals are now 4-2 on the year.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday night as they travel to Bismarck State College to take on the Mystics. Game times are at 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
