Lady Royals Win Battle of Matchups

On the road in Thief River Falls, MN the Lady Royals basketball team would take on the NJCAA D3 #1 ranked team in Northland.

In a game that was more of a chess match then basketball game, both head coaches moved players like pieces on the board to achieve the desired result. It was Northland who had LRSC on the ropes early with an eight point lead middle of the second quarter. A late run by the Lady Royals would prove to be the turning point. Head Coach Danny Mertens would make a decision to go with a smaller more athletic lineup which proved to be problematic for Northland's bigs. A switch to a 1-3-1 defense by LRSC was another move that paid big divedends for Lake Region. The move yielded only 22 points in the second half from the Pioneers while the small ball lineup for the Lady Royals exploded for a 42 point. The final score LRSC 78 NCTC 60.

The Lady Royals had three players score twenty points or more. Jordyn Worley had 22pts 7rebs, Dani Schwanke came off the bench to put in 21pts and 6rebs and Maara Nelson had 20pts 8rebs.

Head Coach Danny Mertens said after the game, "This was one of the more technical games I have coached in. There were a lot of adjustments made throughout by both teams. Hats off to my girls for being able to make changes on the fly and pull off the win. The stat I was most impressed with tonight was we only turned the ball over seven times, while turning them over twenty eight. We gave ourselves a lot of extra possessions on a night we did not shoot the ball well."

With the win, LRSC is now 8-3 on the season with a little bit of time off before they take on Iowa Central, Saturday December 15th in Wahpeton, ND.
