The Lake Region State College Royals basketball teams played host to MonDak Conference Foe Dawson CC on Wednesday night.
You always want to protect your home court and the Royals were unable to do that. In the women's game DCC would jump out to a 47-29 halftime lead. The Royals would outscore the Buccaneers in the 2nd half but it was too little too late as Dawson would win by the final score of 73-60.
Averi Ziegler and Kayla Byrne would pace the Royals in scoring with 10pts each.
Head Coach Danny Mertens would say after the game, "You can't get out to that kind of a slow start, in a conference game. We needed to be better from the tip. I was proud of how the girls didn't quit and we continued to fight until the end. We just finished a tough stretch of five games in eight days. I am looking forward to getting our girls some rest and putting in some much needed practice time on the floor."
On the men's side of things, it was somewhat off the opposite of the women's. LRSC was able to jump out to an early 31-25 half time lead. However, in the 2nd half Dawson would turn up the pressure causing 15 2nd half turnovers from the Royals that made the difference in the game. The final Dawson 74 Lake Region 66.
Carson Henningsgard would lead the Royals with a 19pt 7reb 5ast performance. Beijan Newbern would chip in 12pts and 6rebs.
Head Coach Jared Marshall said, "I thought we lost focus in the 2nd half. We weren't able to get the stops we were getting in the first half which led to them being able to press us more in the 2nd. In the game we had 26 turnovers and gave up 17 offensive rebounds. That is a lot of extra possessions we gave them, that we couldn't afford. We will get back in the gym this week and get better in practice. I like this group, how we play together and how tough we are."
