The Lake Region State College Royals basketball teams squared off against Dakota College at Bottineau on Sunday.
First up were the women. In what was a close game throughout the Lady Royals came up short against DCB 56-47. LRSC had the lead down to four multiple times in the second half but they could never get over the hump. Turnovers (21) and a tough shooting night from the field, 20% FG & 29% 3FG were the Royals undoing. Averi Ziegler turned a player of the week type performance with 13pts and 17rebs. Maddy Leaf would also score 13pts.
Head Coach Danny Mertens, "We had our chances. I thought we did an outstanding job guarding all night. You expect to win a game when you hold a team under 30% from the field. Problem was, we just could not get our offense going either. Right now we just have to continue to get better and have some players step up and make plays for us."
Next, was the men. Securing what Head Coach Jared Marshall would refer to as an, "Ugly Win," after the game. The Royals would secure a 69-54 win over DCB. LRSC continues to hang its hat on defense, holding teams below 60 points in 4 of the last 6 games. Big performances off the bench from Trace Evans, 20pts 5rebs, Djordje Mitrovic 9pts, and James Sommer, 8pts & 5rebs carried the Royals to victory. Beijan Newbern would lead LRSC with 15pts and 8rebs.
Head Coach Jared Marshall, "This one was a bit of a struggle. We did a great job scoring at and around the hoop. We just need to knockdown some three's to really open up things offensively for us. I love how we continue to bring it on the defensive end. I love our effort."
